HMS Bulwark 1960
A few queries regarding this Mombasa picture postcard sent forces' concessionary mail and marked HMS Bulwark.
Cancelled Maritime Mail, it must have been posted mid July or later as the GB postboy stamp was not issued until 7 July 1960.
Google tells me Bulwark left UK in early 1960 and was involved in a number of operations throughout the year including in East Africa.
I acquired this card some time ago among a small collection of East Africa military mail but have only now got round to mounting.
The previous owner identified it as originating from 42 Commando in 1960 which is possible as this battalion was allocated to Bulwark at this time. They also placed the carrier at Mombasa in early August 1960 although google suggests Singapore. Are they right? Was the year 1960? Was the location Kenya? Was the sender indeed a commando or was he a Bulwark crew member? It seems the sender's name was Alfred but I can't read his surname.
So what about the postcard? Did the sender buy the card in Kenya while on leave or operations and then take it to the Far East before use rather than posting it in East Africa?
