War Office M.O.2, 1940
I have a cover with a red circular cachet with the words "GENERAL STAFF M.O.2 WAR OFFICE" and an OFFICIAL PAID / LIVERPOOL cancel dated 4 M(?) 40.
Can anyone inform me what department or directorate M.O.2 was?

The initials MO reflect the Directorate of Military Operations and MO2 would appear to be connected with intelligence - MO2 & MO3: Foreign intelligence and regional analysis. It appears that MO2 was the sub-directorate handling Middle East, Africa, and non-European strategic operations.
I understand that the Directorate of Military Operations and the Directorate of Military Intelligence worked as a combined department during the war.
More information could well be found in the The National Archives WO106 class of files - War Office: Directorate of Military Operations and Military Intelligence, and predecessors: Correspondence and Papers.
