US Soldiers Mail from WWI

A puzzle today, as part of gathering censorship illustrations I'm finding a number of US related items which raise for me more questions than I can find answers.
In fact the subject does not seem to have been addressed.
I think there's a lot to discover about how the American mail was handled going back to the states.
I'm seeing mail from UK camps through Liverpool censored there,
Mail from the Front with British censor stamps and FPO/ APO cancels, where the British censor number is removed. (CM6) This mail went through Liverpool.

Saw a Sky documentary recently about the 1918 flu pandemic, (they traced it back to one man on a farm tending chickens who were in contact with Wildfowl, he was conscripted and the camp he was in became the centre of the pandemic)
However, what caught my attention was reference to Leviathan and other troop ships sailing directly for Brest,
Suggesting that mail from the front may have been shipped directly back to the states by that route. So, avoiding the British censorship,
More research and material needed to establish a timeline.
